Rode Hill Fishery

As a member of C.E.F.A.S, not only do we manage the lakes and the fish they contain to the highest professional level, but we also encourage the surrounding habitat to promote a rich mix of flora and fauna.

Rode Fishery was originally excavated in the late 19th century as part of an old Brickyard, the clay found was used to make red bricks, which later were used to build the Rode brewery and other village buildings.

Given the layout of the land and the natural water levels, it soon filled up and has grown into what you can see today. Wood and Middle lakes were created in the 80’s, mainly to encourage more wildlife, and where then replanted with various types of willows. Over the years, the area has developed a lush natural environment which has only been encouraged to grow and flourish with the natural migration of duck and geese in the area.

In 2012 we decided to turn a constantly wet part of the field next door to the Middle Lake into a purpose built fishing lake, connecting the water flow to the other three existing lakes. It was opened in May 2014 and is stocked with Common Carp, Tench, Dace and Perch and there are some mighty fine specimens in it. The fish we transferred between ponds, carp averaged about 8lbs. In the older more natural area of the ponds the fish range greatly in weight, spreading from 10-19 pounds, rumours even of fish that exceed 25 pounds, yet to be caught.
